MET GET SET FOR LONDON 2012

TyneMet is celebrating being the first College in the country to be awarded membership of the Get Set Network, for colleges and schools who are living the Olympic and Paralympic values.

Membership of the Network will help TyneMet to engage all of its staff, students and service users with the London 2012 Olympic Games and the many opportunities which it will provide.

At a launch event held to celebrate the achievement, TyneMet Principal John Vincent spoke of the need to create a lasting Games legacy for young people throughout the country, which will raise standards in education, employment and sport.

Kate Filochowski from PODIUM, the FE and HE unit for the 2012 Olympics, attended the launch event to welcome TyneMet into the Get Set family. “Through the Get Set programme we aim to show that everyone can get involved in the Olympics” said Filochowski. “TyneMet will be an example for other schools and colleges to look up to, not only in the run up to the games, but long after too”.

The College has already held numerous Olympic-themed events, with many more planned for the future, including a TyneMet Olympics.

TyneMet?s commitment to using the Olympics to inspire its students was evident at the Get Set launch itself where hospitality and catering students served an Olympic-themed menu to guests in the college restaurant, Segedunum. All those in attendance were extremely impresses with the standard of the food and service received.

MORE OPPORTUNITIES STATESIDE FOR NESA FOOTBALLERS

NESA and Pass4Soccer have begun the search for the next crop of talented Tyneside footballers to head to the US.

Barry Pool’s TyneMet-based Pass4Soccer operation placed 140 students at Universities across North America last year, with TyneMet students Alex Redfearn, Dan Smee and Mick McMullan 3 of those to gain scholarships at US schools.

And the process has begun to find opportunities for more TyneMet footballers to head stateside.

Ian Bogie, TyneMet’s head of football and the current manager of Gateshead said: “The three lads showed real promise during their time on the football development programme and were rewarded with the fantastic opportunity of a USA scholarship – playing at a high standard of football whilst studying to gain a degree.

“Being talented footballers and working at a high standard academically can save students thousands of pounds in university fees whilst studying in a fantastic country – opening the door for exciting career opportunities.”

Next year, Pass4Soccer will find places for another 6 Students from TyneMet’s North East Sports Academy, including for the first time, two girls.
“All the students we placed last year are using their football skills to pay for a top class education in the States” said Pass4Soccer’s Barry Pool.
“These guys and girls have the opportunity to stay in football and, whilst they’re at university, play at the highest level of college sport in the US.”

SLAM DUNK FOR TYNEMET COLLEGE SPORTS COURSE

BUDDING basketball stars from across the region no longer have to choose between the court and the classroom. That’s because the Newcastle Eagles have just launched the Advanced Apprenticeship In Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme on Tyneside.

Eight teenagers have joined the scheme, which is being delivered at TyneMet College, in Wallsend, by Eagles’ assistant coach Marc Steutel. Marc, who is also TyneMet’s basketball development officer, said: “I really think the AASE programme will be awesome for students in our area. Other sports already have it up and running and their athletes are thriving as a result.

“As a programme, I’m confident it will grow and grow year-on-year and it offers a fantastic opportunity for young basketball players to make significant progress. The AASE athletes do an NVQ qualification on top of their technical certificate – that can be an A-level or a BTEC qualification".

“They must achieve eight units over two years and those units are divided up to ensure the athletes gain a wide-ranging grounding in basketball.”

Newcastle Eagles turned to Steutel and TyneMet to deliver the AASE programme after the team forged a partnership with the college’s North East Sports Academy (NESA) last year.

“We do work with three further education colleges in the region in a basketball development role,” said Eagles’ managing director Paul Blake. But the fact that we were already in a partnership with NESA meant TyneMet were the perfect service provider for us in this case".

“In addition Marc is a coach we rate very highly. Using TyneMet to deliver the AASE scheme is the perfect way to develop an already strong partnership.”

NESA will host the eight AASE students within their 42-strong basketball roster with a view to doubling that number next summer.

“The idea is to ensure as many young people as possible stay in basketball in the long term,” added Steutel. All 11 accredited sites nationally are linked by an on-line video conferencing facility and students are encouraged to set their goals in front of fellow athletes from across the country".

“They set goals in three distinct areas: basketball playing, basketball non-playing and non-basketball.

“The goals will ensure students begin thinking about their options and opportunities well in advance of any decision days.

“Of course the majority of our AASE students see themselves playing basketball professionally and we encourage that, but the fact remains that only a small minority will actually be able to make a living out of playing basketball and AASE prepares them for alternative career paths within the sport.”
